Opera Orlando goes On the Town to Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre for Lizbeth, a contemporary one-act opera in English about accused axe-murderer Lizzie Borden. Stage director Eve Summer directs this nightmarish exploration of Lizbeth’s family life and potential motivations, joined by Israeli conductor Noam Aviel leading musicians from Alterity Chamber Orchestra. Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Ann McMahon Quintero makes her Company debut portraying the complex and enigmatic Lizbeth, joined by soprano and former studio artist Jillian Morrisini singing younger versions of Lizzie, with Opera Orlando favorites baritone Chadley Ballantyne and mezzo-soprano Sarah Purser singing the roles of Borden’s father and stepmother.

Lizbeth explores the causes of the notorious hatchet murders that popular legend attributes to Lizzie Borden. It is 1918. A middle-aged Lizzie – now calling herself “Lizbeth” – sits alone at tea, recalling her childhood and youth. As the memories wash over her, the veneer of her comfortable respectability is peeled back, laying bare the harsh reality of the Borden household. Lizbeth is forced to confront her true past, and her thoughts and emotions become an inescapable nightmare.
