THE PRODUCTION TEAM

Mozart’s comedic and mystical singspiel (a predecessor to musical theater) transports the audience to the mythical realm of Ozymandia where the story unfolds in frames like a graphic novel bringing all of the arts together to tell this fantastical tale. Artistic director Grant Preisser directs this all-new production inspired by the fine art anime of Yoshitaka Amana, with dance choreographed by Maxine Montilus, puppetry by MicheLee Puppets, and music conducted by Chaowen Ting, making her Company debut. She will take the podium and lead the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, along with a stellar cast including Metropolitan Opera soprano Kathryn Bowden as Queen of the Night, bass William Meinert as Sarastro, the stunning, up-and-coming soprano Magdalena Kuźma as Pamina, and renowned baritone Brian James Myer as Papageno. The cast also includes members of the Opera Orlando Chorus and Youth Company.

Attending the Opera is a great excuse to dress to the nines or even to come dressed in the style and character of the opera being presented. Opera attendees are encouraged to dress formally and comfortably in whatever style they chose to enjoy the show. Please silence or turn off your cell phone and please refrain from using your cell phone or any other electronic device during the performance.

SYNOPSIS

Prince Tamino, traveling in a foreign land, is being pursued by a terrifying monster. Three mysterious women, servants of the Queen of the Night, appear and slay the monster. Afterwards, they give Tamino a portrait of the Queen’s daughter, Pamina, and he falls instantly in love, vowing to rescue her from the evil Sarastro, priest of the sun, in whose faraway temple she has been imprisoned. The three women give Tamino a magic flute to help in his quest and with the aid of the bird-catcher, Papageno, Tamino journeys to Sarastro’s temple and learns that all may not be as it seems.

Tamino learns that it is not Sarastro who is evil but the Queen of the Night and that Pamina was only being held to keep her hidden from her mother. Sarastro gives Tamino a new quest; he must now undergo a series of trials to prove himself worthy of Pamina’s love.

Using the power of the magic flute, Tamino and Pamina are able to overcome their trials and earn the right to be with each other. At the moment of their success, the Queen of the Night arrives with her servants to storm the temple and destroy it, but Sarastro appears and defeats them, casting them out. The sun rises on a new era for the united heroes.
